Bainbridge Island Historical Museum

The Bainbridge Island Historical Museum's exhibit, "The Overland Travelers," commemorates
the centennial of the world's longest horseback journey—a 20,352 mile trek during which the
participants visited each of the nation's 48 state capitals between May 1, 1912, and May 21, 1915.

The Bainbridge Island Historical Museum's award-winning exhibit—"The Overland Travelers"—commemorates the centennial of the world's longest horseback journey. Four men, five horses and a dog began their journey with a visit to Olympia, WA, on May 1, 1912. The group finished its 20,352 mile, 1,127 day trek in Sacramento, CA, on May 21, 1915. In the end, the travelers visited each of the nation's 48 state capitals. To tell the story of this epic trip, the museum used data from the 1910 and 2010 censuses to illustrate how each capital city's population changed over the 100-year span.

As the anniversary of each state capital visit approached, the museum highlighted each milestone by featuring census data in its social media posts.
