Amelia Earhart Birthplace Museum

The Amelia Earhart Birthplace Museum in Atchison, KS, uses census data to assist in writing
grant requests seeking funds to expand and upgrade exhibits and facilities.

The National Park Service added Amelia Earhart's Atchison, KS, birthplace to the National Historic Register in 1971, and the home remained a private residence until 1984. In that year, Dr. Eugene J. Bribach donated $100,000 to the Ninety-Nines (an international organization of women pilots of which Amelia Earhart was a member and first president) to purchase and maintain the site.

Over the next decade, the Ninety-Nines restored the 1861 Gothic Revival home. In 1997, the Kansas Historical Society presented the museum with the Nyle J. Miller Award for their extensive restoration efforts. Restoration and exhibit development are ongoing and the museum uses census data for grant proposals. Grant money enables the Amelia Earhart Birthplace Museum to "continue to restore and preserve the home to the period when Amelia lived [there], and to portray her life and those of other women aviators through educational and interpretive exhibits, activities, and events."
