The April 6, 1861, Harper's Weekly magazine details newly released statistical analysis from the 1860 Census. At that time, New York was the largest state with a population of 3,880,735. Iowa saw the greatest growth from 1850, with its population growing from 192,214 to 614,913—an increase of 251%. Vermont saw the lowest growth, with its population changing from 314,120 to 315,098—an increase of just 0.31%.
