The estimated number of related children ages 5 to 17 in families in poverty in Puerto Rico in 1993 is 570,512.
This estimate is based in part on an experimental survey of family income conducted by the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the Department of Labor and Human Resources of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Because that survey was experimental, and in light of the manipulations required to derive estimates for the desired age group, we are unable to estimate confidence intervals.
Population estimates are available for the Commonwealth as a product of the Federal-State Cooperative Population Estimates Program. An estimate of the population ages 5 to 17 was specially prepared by the International Programs Center, Population Division, the U.S. Bureau of the Census. The midyear estimate of the number of persons ages 5 to 17, inclusive, in Puerto Rico in 1994 is 836,051.
