Release Notes: December 2020

This release of the IDB contains revised estimates and projections for 15 countries or areas incorporating new data or analysis. All estimates and projections have been produced by sex and single years of age up to 100 years and over. For information on earlier updates to the IDB, see Release notes history.

This release also includes the extension of population projections from the year 2050 to 2060 for the United States, and from 2050 to 2100 for all remaining countries. For more information, see the IDB methodology statement.

Below is a brief summary of revisions for countries experiencing more than a 500,000 change from the previously estimated 2020 population. 

The estimated population of Central African Republic in 2020 is 5.3 million, which is about 728 thousand (12.2 percent) less than our previous estimate.  The decrease is due to higher estimates of mortality and net emigration.

The estimated population of Ghana in 2020 is 31.6 million, which is about 2.3 million (7.8 percent) more than our previous estimate.  The increase is mainly due to higher estimates of immigration.

The estimated population of Indonesia in 2020 is 272.9 million, which is about 5.8 thousand (2.2 percent) greater than our previous estimate.  The increase is due to higher estimates of immigration.

The estimated population of Malaysia in 2020 is 33.2 million, about 500 thousand (1.6 percent) greater than our previous estimate.  The increase is due to lower estimates of mortality and higher estimates of immigration.

The estimated population of Malawi in 2020 is 22.1 million, which is about 888 thousand (4.2 percent) greater than our previous estimate.  The increase is due to lower estimates of mortality.

The estimated population of Tanzania in 2020 is 60.4 million, which is about 1.8 million (3.1 percent) higher than our previous estimate.  The increase is mainly due to lower estimates of mortality and higher estimates of immigration.

The estimated population of Togo in 2020 is 8.1 million, which is about 532 thousand (6.2 percent) less than our previous estimate.  The decrease is due to higher estimates of emigration.

The estimated population of Vietnam in 2020 is 101.7 million, about 3 million (3.1 percent) greater than our previous estimate.  The increase is mainly due to higher estimates of fertility.

The estimated population of Zambia in 2020 is 18.5 million, about 1.1 million (6.3 percent) greater than our previous estimate.  The increase is due to lower estimates of mortality and higher estimates of immigration.
