Release Notes: December 2019

The release of the IDB contains revised estimates and projections for 22 countries or areas incorporating new data or analysis. All projections have been produced by sex and single years of age up to 100 years and over. For information on earlier updates to the IDB, see Release notes history.

Below is a brief summary of revisions for countries experiencing more than a 500,000 change from the previously estimated 2019 population.

The estimated population of Australia in 2019 is 25.1 million, which is about 1.4 million (5.9 percent) more than our previous estimate. The increase is mainly due to higher estimates of immigration.

The estimated population of Benin in 2019 is 12.4 million, about 789 thousand (6.8 percent) greater than our previous estimate. The increase is due to higher estimates of immigration.

The estimated population of Burundi in 2019 is 11.5 million, which is about 701 thousand (5.7 percent) lower than our previous estimate. The decrease is due to higher estimates of emigration.

The estimated population of Cameroon in 2019 is 27 million, which is about 685 thousand (2.6 percent) greater than our previous estimate. The increase due to higher estimates of immigration.

The estimated population of Canada in 2019 is 37.4 million, which is about 1.3 million (3.5 percent) higher than our previous estimate. The increase is mainly due to higher estimates of immigration.

The estimated population of Congo (Kinshasa) in 2019 is 98.6 million, which is about 11.3 million (13 percent) larger than our previous estimate. The increase is mainly due to markedly higher estimates of fertility.

The estimated population of Ethiopia in 2019 is 105.4 million, which is about 6.1 million (5.5 percent) lower than our previous estimate. The decrease is due to lower estimates of fertility.

The estimated population of Iraq in 2019 is 38 million, which is about 3.2 million (7.7 percent) less than our previous estimate. The decrease is due to higher estimates of mortality and lower estimates of fertility.

The estimated population of Kenya in 2019 is 52.4 million, which is about 3.2 million (6.6 percent) more than our previous estimate. The increase is due to lower estimates of mortality and higher estimates of fertility.

The estimated population of Morocco in 2019 is 35.2 million, which is about 584 thousand (1.7 percent) greater than our previous estimate. The increase is due to lower estimates of mortality, higher estimates of fertility, and lower estimates of emigration.

The estimated population of Mozambique in 2019 is 29.3 million, which is about 1.4 million (5.1 percent) higher than our previous estimate. The increase is due to higher estimates of fertility.

The estimated population of Niger in 2019 is 22 million, which is about 1.5 million (7.1 percent) larger than our previous estimate. The increase is mainly due to higher estimates of fertility.

The estimated population of Pakistan in 2019 is 228.7 million, which is about 17.9 million (8.5 percent) more than our previous estimate. The increase is due to higher estimates of fertility.

The estimated population of Syria in 2019 is 18.6 million, which is about 2.3 million (11 percent) lower than our previous estimate. The decrease is due to higher estimates of mortality.

The estimated population of United States in 2019 is 330.3 million, which is about 1.6 million (0.5 percent) less than our previous estimate. The decrease is mainly due to lower estimates of immigration.

The estimated population of Venezuela in 2019 is 28.7 million, which is about 3.4 million (10.5 percent) lower than our previous estimate. The decrease is due to higher estimates of mortality and higher estimates of emigration.
