Puerto Rico Community Survey Housing Unit Estimate Changes Between 2021 and 2022

Users may note a significant increase in the estimate of total housing units for Puerto Rico between 2021 and 2022. The list of addresses the Census Bureau used to select the sample for the Puerto Rico Community Survey (PRCS) underwent significant changes in 2022. These changes were a result of 2020 Census operations, such as address canvassing and enumeration activities. Due to these changes and the lack of independent housing unit estimates in Puerto Rico to use as controls in the weighting process, the estimated number of housing units in Puerto Rico changed significantly between 2021 and 2022.

In addition to these changes, and the weighting methodology procedure to generate consistent estimates of occupied housing units and householders, users also may see impacts in other Puerto Rico estimates. In particular, average household size and average family size both experienced a decrease between 2021 and 2022 in Puerto Rico and many of the geographies within it. For these reasons, the Census Bureau recommends using caution when comparing the tabulated estimates of these topics for Puerto Rico across these years.
