Census Bureau Releases Report on Nearly 15 Years of Pre-Pandemic Migration Patterns

Press Release Number CB23-TPS.80

JULY 13, 2023 – The U.S. Census Bureau today released a new report examining the domestic migration patterns of people living in the United States, over a nearly 15-year time span. The report, Migration in the United States: 2006 to 2019, provides a broad overview of U.S. migration patterns from 2006 to 2019 for the nation, regions and states using American Community Survey (ACS) 1-year estimates.

The report underscores migration out of California prior to 2020, among other notable highlights. The report also notes how Texas and Arizona both gained large numbers of movers from California.

Other highlights include:

  • In 2019, 13.7% of people in the United States moved during the past year, the lowest mover rate since 2006.
  • While both the number of movers and the mover rate declined between 2006 and 2019, movers became more likely to cross geographic boundaries by moving between counties, between states, or from abroad.
  • Movers within the same county consistently accounted for the largest share of movers between 2006 and 2019, though this share declined from 2006 to 2019.
  • Among domestic movers, both the share of movers between regions and the share of movers between states increased from 2006 to 2019.

Future reports will expand on points covered in this report by focusing on specific migration topics, such as estimates by selected demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, and for selected geographies.
