Migration in the United States: 2006 to 2019

Written by:
Report Number ACS-53

Introduction

Moves between residences are the building blocks of larger migration patterns. Migration, also called residential mobility, helps shape the demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of the United States and the regions and states within it. Estimates from the American Community Survey (ACS) answer questions about migration in the United States, including how many people moved and where people moved to and from. The ACS defines migration as living in a different house or apartment 1 year ago. In 2019, about 44.3 million people living in the United States moved during the past year. While both the number of movers and the percentage of people moving declined from 2006 to 2019, movers became more likely to cross geographic boundaries by moving between counties, between states, or from abroad.
