In 2022, U.S. nonfarm companies with employees and without employees invested $2,197.0 billion in new and used structures and equipment. Companies with employees accounted for $1,899.9 billion (86.5 percent) and companies without employees accounted for $297.1 billion (13.5 percent) of capital spending in 2022. (See Summary Table A below, and Tables 1a and 1b).

Companies with employees

In 2022, U.S. nonfarm employer businesses invested $1,899.9 billion in new and used structures and equipment, an increase of $217.8 billion (12.9 percent) from the revised 2021 employer total of $1,682.1 billion. Total spending on new structures and new equipment was $1,786.4 billion, an increase of $208.1 billion (13.2 percent) from the revised 2021 total of $1,578.3 billion. Total spending on used structures and used equipment was $113.5 billion, not statistically different from the revised 2021 total of $103.8 billion. (See Summary Table B below, and Tables 1a and 1b).

Expenditures on new and used structures totaled $723.0 billion in 2022, an increase of $91.3 billion (14.5 percent) from the revised 2021 total of $631.7 billion. (See Figure 1). Of this amount, $671.4 billion (92.9 percent) was spent for new structures, an increase of $88.4 billion (15.2 percent) from the revised 2021 total of $583.0 billion. Expenditures for used structures totaled $51.7 billion, not statistically different from the revised total of $48.8 billion in 2021.

Spending on new and used equipment totaled $1,176.9 billion in 2022, up $126.5 billion (12.0 percent) from the revised total of $1,050.3 billion in 2021. Of this amount, $1,115.0 billion (94.7 percent) was for new equipment, an increase of $119.7 billion (12.0 percent) from the revised total of $995.3 billion in 2021. Expenditures for used equipment totaled $61.8 billion (5.3 percent of total equipment spending), an increase of $6.8 billion (12.3 percent) from the revised total of $55.0 billion in 2021. (Data in this section is based on the 2017 North American Industry Classification System. Data is only for companies with employees because companies without employees are not asked to report capital expenditures by sector or industry.)

Of the 19 NAICS major industry sectors covered in this report, 11 had a statistically significant increase in capital spending in 2022 compared with 2021, 1 had a statistically significant decrease in spending, and 7 showed no statistically significant change. The values of structures and equipment may not sum to the values of total capital expenditures due to rounding (See Summary Chart A below, Figure 2 and Figure 3).

Of the 131 industries covered in this report, 61 had a statistically significant increase in spending, 15 had a statistically significant decrease, and 55 showed no statistically significant change from the prior year. The values of structures and equipment may not sum to the values of total capital expenditures due to rounding.
