In 2018, U.S. nonfarm employer businesses invested $1,697.9 billion in new and used structures and equipment, an increase of $120.1 billion (7.6 percent) from the revised 2017 employer total of $1,577.8 billion (See Summary Table A below, and Tables 1a and 1b). Total spending on new structures and new equipment was $1,608.5 billion, an increase of $111.3 billion (7.4 percent) from the revised 2017 total of $1,497.2 billion. Information on companies without employees was not collected for the 2018 survey.

Expenditures on new and used structures totaled $644.4 billion in 2018, up $32.4 billion (5.3 percent) from 2017 (See Figure 1). Of this amount, $608.1 billion (94.4 percent) was spent for new structures, an increase of $31.7 billion (5.5 percent) from 2017. Expenditures for used structures totaled $36.3 billion.

Spending on new and used equipment totaled $1,053.5 billion in 2018, up $87.7 billion (9.1 percent) from 2017. Of this amount, $1,000.4 billion (95.0 percent) was for new equipment, an increase of $79.6 billion (8.6 percent) from 2017. Expenditures for used equipment totaled $53.1 billion, an increase of $8.1 billion (18.0 percent) from 2017.

Of the 19 NAICS major industry sectors covered in this report, 6 had a statistically significant increase in capital spending in 2018 compared with 2017, and 13 showed no statistically significant change. The values of structures and equipment may not sum to the values of total capital expenditures due to rounding. (See Summary Chart A below, Figure 2 and Figure 3).
