Investment spending by employer firms in the mining sector increased from $30.6 billion in 1999 to $149.9 billion in 2008. From 2007 to 2008, spending growth in mining in absolute terms ($29.2 billion) exceeded spending growth in all other sectors and mining’s share of total investment reached a high of 11.6 percent. In 2008, investment spending in the manufacturing sector ($211.4 billion) was not statistically different from the 2007 level ($197.3 billion), which was the highest level since 2000.
