1940 Census of Population: Special Report on Institutional Population 14 Years and Over, Characteristics of Inmates in Penal Institutions, and in Institutions for the Delinquent, Defective, and Dependent

This report presents statistics on all persons 14 years old and over who were inmates of certain types of institutions, e.g., prisons or reformatories; local jails or workhouses; mental institutions; homes for the aged, infirm, or needy; and others.

The tables show the age, marital status, highest grade of school completed, and citizenship of the institutional population by type of institution, color, and sex, for the United States, regions, and States, urban and rural. In addition, less detailed data are shown for each urban place and each county.
