1940 Census of Population: Families

The four reports in this series are based on tabulations of samples of the population returns of the 1940 census, and cover the following topics.

  1. Types of families (Title page, Contents, and Introduction are in the PDF to the right.)
  2. Size of family and age of head
  3. Employment status
  4. Family wage or salary income in 1939

The term "type of family” is applied to the classification of families by sex and marital status of head and number of children in the family. Families are presented by type, cross-classified by family size, number of children under 10 and under 18 years old, tenure, and monthly rental value of home.

A Note on Language

Census statistics date back to 1790 and reflect the growth and change of the United States. Past census reports contain some terms that today’s readers may consider obsolete and inappropriate. As part of our goal to be open and transparent with the public, we are improving access to all Census Bureau original publications and statistics, which serve as a guide to the nation's history.
