1860 Census: Manufactures of the United States

Manufactures of the United States in 1860; complied from the original returns of the Eighth Census under the direction of the Secretary of the Interior.

Analytic introduction is followed by statistics for States and counties:

  1. Principal industry in each county with number of establishments, capital invested, cost of raw material, number employed by sex, annual cost of labor, and annual value of products;
  2. Recapitulation by counties;
  3. Recapitulation by industry.

State tables are followed by regional and national summaries.

A Note on Language

Census statistics date back to 1790 and reflect the growth and change of the United States. Past census reports contain some terms that today’s readers may consider obsolete and inappropriate. As part of our goal to be open and transparent with the public, we are improving access to all Census Bureau original publications and statistics, which serve as a guide to the nation's history.
