Agriculture of the United States in 1860, compiled from the original returns of the Eighth Census under the Secretary of the Interior.
Analytic introduction is followed by statistics for States and counties: Acres of land in farms, improved and unimproved; cash value of farm and value of farming implements and machinery; livestock and value, and principal crops; farms containing three acres and more by size of farm; and number of slaveholders and slaves.
Census statistics date back to 1790 and reflect the growth and change of the United States. Past census reports contain some terms that today’s readers may consider obsolete and inappropriate. As part of our goal to be open and transparent with the public, we are improving access to all Census Bureau original publications and statistics, which serve as a guide to the nation's history.
