Open Mapping Education Series

Learn how to map Census Bureau data using OpenStreetMap and Geographic Information System (GIS)

Description

This course is divided in two parts:

1. In the OpenStreetMap modules, you will learn:

    ✓    How to add a feature to OpenStreetMap using iD Editor.

    ✓    The role of the Tasking Manager in the control and coordination of mapping workflow.

    ✓    How to master the OpenStreetMap interface by creating an account and using its basic mapping features.

2. In the Geographic Information System (GIS) modules, you will learn:

    ✓    How to access and use Census Bureau datasets and TIGER shapefiles to create maps.

    ✓    The basics of the QGIS tool and its features.

    ✓    How to explore a data attribute table.

After completing this course, you will be able create maps suitable for publication using TIGER spacial data and Census Bureau datasets.

Who Should Take this Course?

Data analysts, data scientists, demographers, geographers, planners, developers and researchers who wish to learn more how to visualize and map Census Data. Prior knowledge of OpenStreetMap and GIS is not required.

Instructors

Maggie Cawley is a geospatial consultant, specializing in open source geospatial tools and education.

Steven Johnson is a geographer with 30 years of applied experience with GIS and geospatial information management.

Beginning of OpenStreetMap Lessons

 

 

OpenStreetMap - Module 1: Account Creation and Interface

In this module you will learn how to master the OpenStreetMap interface by creating an account and using its basic mapping features.

OpenStreetMap - Module 2: Editing and Tagging with iD Editor

In this module you will learn three basic steps to add a feature to OpenStreetMap using iD Editor: Digitize an object by tracing it using aerial imagery, tag the object, and compare road datasets.

OpenStreetMap - Module 3: The OpenStreetMap Tasking Manager

In this module you will learn the role of the Tasking Manager in the control and coordination of mapping workflow.

 

 

Beginning of Geographic Information System (GIS) Lessons

 

 

GIS - Module 1: Introduction to GIS And Data

In this module you will learn about Geographic Information System (GIS), including how to download and install it. You will also learn about Census Bureau datasets, and TIGER shapefiles.

GIS - Module 2: QGIS Basic I: The Interface

In this module you all learn the basics of QGIS, tools and menu options as well as how to download TIGER data and how to add TIGER vector data to a map. Next, this module will cover how to explore a data attribute table.

GIS - Module 3: QGIS Basic II: Create a Basic Map

In this module you will learn how to create a map suitable for publication using TIGER spacial data. You will also learn how to use Print Composer tools, style your map and arrange layers.
