Pathways Program - Internship Program

The Internship Program (IP) provides paid work experience to students who are in high school or pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in an accredited college or university (including Community College).  Internships can be seasonal (summer, fall, spring) or year round.  At the successful conclusion of this program, they may be eligible for non-competitive conversion to a permanent or term (lasting one to four years) position.

Positions Available

Positions and job duties will vary depending on the area of study and position/series. The Census Bureau produces quality data that help Americans better understand our country- its population, resources, economy, society and culture. We recruit students majoring in the following (but not limited to) areas of study; Economics, Statistics, Business Administration, Marketing, Finance, Sociology, Psychology, Demography, Criminal Justice, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Science, or Information Systems Management, Geography and Cartography.

Basic Qualifications

  • U. S. Citizenship
  • Enrolled as a degree seeking student in an accredited school
  • Attending at least half-time
  • 18 years or older at the time of appointment
  • Must have and maintain at least a 3.0 G.P.A. throughout the entire internship

Program Completion and Conversion

  • Interns may be non-competitively converted to a permanent position (or to a term position lasting 1-4 years) within 120 days of successful completion of the degree.
  • To be eligible to convert, Interns must complete a minimum of 640 hours of work prior to the completion of their degree, finish their degree or certificate requirements, and have performed their job successfully.
  • Census may waive up to 320 of the required 640 hours of work for Interns who demonstrate high potential as evidenced by outstanding academic achievement (3.5 GPA) and exceptional job performance.
  • Census may credit up to 320 hours of the required 640 hours of work for comparable non-Federal internship experience in a field.

It is important to remember that eligibility for conversion does not guarantee that the agency will decide to opt for conversion.

Housing

The Census Bureau does not offer housing assistance. However, the Partnership for Public Service has created a list of neighborhoods, apartments, and sublets throughout the city that are popular areas for college students and recent graduates. They have put together a starter’s guide for housing options.

Transit Subsidy

As a federal employee, you are eligible to receive a transit subsidy each month to compensate you for your travel to and from work via certain types of public transportation.

How Will You Be Evaluated

Veterans’ preference applies to selection for positions in the Pathways Programs.  Candidates will be assessed based on the basic eligibility requirements.

When Are Selections Made?

Once the hiring manager selects the student, the student coordinator will make the offer and will provide information on the orientation schedule. Orientations days (starts dates) may be at the beginning of each new pay period. Due to the volume of applications, only applicants who are selected for internships will be notified. Your application will be held on file for 120 days after the closing date. During that time, a manager can continue to make selections.
