The Center for Statistical Research & Methodology (CSRM)’s internationally recognized researchers conduct rigorous theoretical and collaborative research for the development of improved or new statistical methods for the Census Bureau’s data collection, analysis, and dissemination programs. The Census Bureau uses statistical methods to conduct censuses and to design and conduct (monthly, quarterly, and annually) probability sample surveys to measure the condition and behavior of the nation’s people. Statistical methods also help integrate data from other sources (e.g., administrative records, commercial data, etc.).
This vacancy is for a Mathematical Statistician (intern), GS-07 (full-time salary $55,924-$72,703) position in the Center for Statistical Research and Methodology at the U.S. Census Bureau, in the Washington DC Metropolitan Area. This position is onsite and is not eligible for remote work. The Census Bureau is accessible by the GREEN Line of the Metro System. This part-time position (up to 40 hours every 2 weeks) is for the period of December 1, 2024 - July 15, 2025, and the possibility exists to extend the appointment (upon supervisory approval). This is an excepted service appointment, and it does not confer permanent status.
Minimum Education Requirement:
A. Degree: that included at 24 semester hours in mathematics and statistics, of which at least 12 semester hours were in mathematics and 6 semester hours were in statistics.
OR
B. Combination of education and experience: at least 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, including at least 12 hours in mathematics and 6 hours in statistics, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
The experience offered in combination with educational courses to meet the requirements in paragraph B above should include evidence of statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying known statistical techniques to data such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance.
Specialized experience is experience at a level and difficulty at the next lower grade equivalent to the GS-05 in the Federal Service. Examples of the specialized experience may include: (1) ability to understand concepts, principles, theories, and methodology of mathematics and statistics and data sources sufficient to support research, interpret findings, evaluate, and perform developmental well-defined assignments; (2) programming knowledge (e.g., R, Python, SAS, C, C++); and (3) strong communication skills (oral/written).

Education: 1 year of graduate level education or superior academic achievement.
