When did the U.S. Census Bureau begin collecting housing data?

The Census Bureau began collecting housing data as part of the decennial census beginning in 1940.

Inspecting punch cards
Housing data collected during the 1940 census were transferred from paper schedules to punch cards.
These Census Bureau employees were tasked with inspecting punch cards for errant holes or damage that
could jam the tabulating machinery.
