The Vehicle Inventory and Use Survey (VIUS) is conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau in partnership with the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS), Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

VIUS provides data on the physical and operational characteristics of the nation’s truck population. Its primary goal is to produce national and state-level estimates of the total number of trucks and truck miles.

Prior to 1997, VIUS was known as the Truck Inventory and Use Survey (TIUS). It was renamed to account for areas of future expansion, including the addition of automobiles and buses.

YOUR RESPONSE IS REQUIRED BY LAW. Title 13 United States Code (U.S.C.), Sections 131 and 182 authorize this collection. Sections 221, 224, and 225 require your response. The U.S. Census Bureau is required by Section 9 of the same law to keep your information CONFIDENTIAL and can use your responses only to produce statistics.

This collection has been approved by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). The eight-digit OMB approval numbers are 0607-0892 and 0607-1021 and appear on the electronic instrument and the paper questionnaire used for this survey. Without this approval we could not conduct this survey.

The Census Bureau is not permitted to publicly release your responses in a way that could identify you, your business, organization or institution. Per the Federal Cybersecurity Enhancement Act of 2015, your data are protected from cybersecurity risks through screening of the systems that transmit your data.

Below are a few things you can use to verify the legitimacy of this survey:

1. Ensure the web address provided in the letter is a "census.gov" domain.
2. Correspondence sent in the form of a letter or email will contain reporting instructions and a phone number for survey assistance.
   
3. On the sign-in screen, a warning message should be present stating the respondent is accessing a U.S. Government computer.
   
4. After clicking on the “Report Now” button in the Respondent Portal, the OMB Number and OMB Approval Expiration information will appear in the lower left on all screens of the electronic reporting instrument.  The bottom of the screen should have a link for the “Burden Statement,” which also contains the OMB eight-digit number.
