This directory contains datasets about citizenship, place of birth, nativity, and year of entry into the United States based on data from the American Community Survey (ACS) and Current Population Survey (CPS). The ACS is a nationwide survey designed to provide communities with reliable and timely demographic, social, economic, and housing data every year. The CPS, sponsored jointly by the U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), is the primary source of labor force statistics for the population of the United States.
The datasets listed include statistics, graphs, maps, microdata, printed reports, and results in other forms. A dataset is the assembled result of one data collection operation as a whole (for example, the 2015 CPS) or in major subsets (2015 Annual Social and Economic Supplement—CPS ASEC). Datasets are usually for public use, with all personally identifiable information removed to ensure confidentiality. Users analyze, extract, customize, and publish statistics.
For more information about the ACS, please visit the ACS page. To access data from the ACS, Decennial Census, and many other sources, go to data.census.gov.
Data users interested in conducting a custom analysis of ACS data can use ACS Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS) files. These microdata files contain population and housing unit responses collected on individual ACS questionnaires, but for a subsample of ACS housing units and group quarters persons. For more information about PUMS, click here.
For more information about the CPS, please visit the CPS page. For CPS and CPS ASEC datasets, data dictionaries, and other technical information, please visit the CPS page.
