Demonstration Data: Profiles of Selected Populations Based on Ancestry Data and Newly Collected Detailed Race Data from the 2022 American Community Survey

Link to profile tables:

Introduction:

This set of tables shows social, economic, household, and demographic characteristics of more than 100 population groups produced using the American Community Survey (ACS) race and ancestry questions. The purpose of these tables is to demonstrate how the characteristics of selected ancestry populations would differ if they were identified using race data rather than ancestry data.

Background:

Prior to 2020, ACS data on detailed White, Black or African American, and Some Other Race populations, such as Lebanese, Haitian, and Brazilian, were primarily collected and tabulated through the ancestry question. Starting in 2020, the Census Bureau implemented changes to the ACS race question, coding, and processing based on research and community feedback over the past decade. Now, the race question collects detailed racial groups from all respondents, regardless of racial category. These tables were produced in response to stakeholder input about the need to understand who is reporting detailed origins in the race question. They inform the public about the similarities and differences between race and ancestry estimates and help data users analyze the characteristics of those reporting specific detailed races and ancestries to determine whether ancestry data could be replaced with race data.

Source of data:

2022 1-yr microdata

Geographic levels:

United States, all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico (one table per geographic level-- 53 tables in total)

Product layout:

The characteristics data are presented in a format based on a standard annual product—the Selected Population Profiles (S0201), with populations identified through the race and ancestry data presented side by side. The estimates, margins of error, and statistical significance are provided for each characteristic.

Groups included:

Each file includes data for 111 ancestry groups that are currently in the ancestry data products. Two of the ancestry groups are separated out into multiple groups using race: Assyrian/Chaldean/Syriac (Assyrian, Chaldean, and Syriac in race) and British (British and British Islander in race).

Notes on race data:

Race data refer to the “alone or in any combination” population, meaning that a person was included in the race column if they reported that group alone or in combination with any other group. Up to eight races could be reported per person.

Notes on ancestry data:

Ancestry data include the population for whom that ancestry was reported as one of their first two valid ancestries. This is the standard way of showing the number of people reporting an ancestry (Table B04006) of the standard ACS data products.

Statistical testing:

The statistical testing incorporates the correlation between the ancestry-based and race-based estimates due to some respondents contributing to both estimates for a given group. Users will not necessarily be able to replicate the test result by using the published estimates and margins of error.
