Data.census.gov and FTP Sites

Data.census.gov allows you to create your own tables or extracts of public use surveys.

Recent sources of Census Bureau data for disability can be found in the following locations:

American Community Survey – 1yr data: Public Use Microdata Sample
American Community Survey – 5yr data: 5-year Estimates – Public Use Microdata Sample
Redesigned Current Population Survey ASEC (2014-Present): March Annual Social and Economic Supplement
Current Population Survey ASEC (1992-2014): March Supplement
Survey of Income and Program Participation: 2008 Panel – [select the wave of interest]

Note: In order to use data.census.gov, you will need to know which survey you want and which variables to use.

The survey’s data dictionary can help you chose the variables you are most interested in. Data dictionaries for each of the surveys can be found in the “technical documentation” section below.

CPS Table Creator

This custom table creator can be used to generate statistics about the population with a work disability from the CPS ASEC.

The following inputs can be entered to replicate the CPS Work Disability Table #3:

Under “Data Options”, Select “Adult Civilian Workers”
Under “Define Your Table”, select “Age” as the first row category, and “Educational Attainment” as the second row category. Select “Work Disability” as the first column category, and “Work Experience” as the second column category.
Under “Statistics”, select “Person Earnings” as the additional numeric variable statistics variable.
Under “Customized Formatting”, use a pre-defined set of age ranges, or customize your own.
