Labor Force Statistics Glossary

The main Glossary on Census.gov provides official definitions for all topics, censuses, surveys and programs. Listed below are common terms used for labor force statistics. These terms link to their glossary page (where available). Definitions are provided for terms not available on the main Census Glossary. Subject definitions specific to the American Community Survey are on the ACS’s Code Lists, Definitions, and Accuracy page as “Subject Definitions”.

Armed Forces - All people between 16 and 65 years old who are on active duty in the United States Armed Forces. Armed Forces data are not shown for the population 65 years and over.

Civilian Employed - See Employed

Civilian Labor Force - All non-institutionalized civilians who are either employed or unemployed.

Labor Force Participation Rate - Represents the proportion of the total 16 years old and over population that is in the labor force
