Business Programs and Surveys

Annual economic surveys cover selected sectors of the U.S. economy and feature industry and geographic statistics that supplement those published in the economic census. Data are available at the national level, and in some cases, for states, metro areas and counties. These surveys provide interim information that is critical for understanding changes in the nation's economic structure and performance.


Annual Capital Expenditures Survey (ACES)
Provides estimates on business spending for new and used structures and equipment.


Annual Retail Trade Survey (ARTS)
The Annual Retail Trade Survey (ARTS) produces industry-level estimates of sales, expenses, and other items for the retail sector in the U.S. each year.


Annual Wholesale Trade Survey (AWTS)
AWTS is conducted every year to provide detailed industry measures of sales, inventories, operational expenses and purchases for wholesale trade activities.


Business Enterprise Research and Development Survey (BERD)
Provides detailed statistics on global and domestic R&D expenses of U.S. based companies and statistics on R&D workforce, IP and technology transfer activities.


Current Industrial Reports (CIR)
Provided monthly, quarterly, and annual measures of industrial activity for many years.


Information & Communication Technology Survey (ICTS)
Provides estimates on non-capitalized and capitalized business spending for information and communication technology equipment and computer software.


Management and Organizational Practices Survey (MOPS)
Provides information on the use of decentralized decision rights, data-driven decision making, and investments in human capital.


Management and Organizational Practices Survey—Hospitals
Provides information on the use of decentralized decision rights, data-driven decision making, and investments in human capital.


Manufacturing Energy Consumption Survey (MECS)
Provides estimates on energy consumption in the manufacturing sector.


Nonemployer Statistics
An annual series that provides subnational economic data for businesses that have no paid employees and are subject to federal income tax.


Service Annual Survey (SAS)
Provides estimates of revenue and other measures for most traditional service industries.
