Surveys and Programs Contributing to Business Counts

Annual economic surveys cover selected sectors of the U.S. economy and feature industry and geographic statistics that supplement those published in the economic census. Data are available at the national level, and in some cases, for states, metro areas and counties. These surveys provide interim information that is critical for understanding changes in the nation's economic structure and performance.


Annual Business Survey (ABS) Program
Provides annual data on select economic and demographic characteristics of employer businesses, including annual R&D estimates.


Annual Retail Trade Survey (ARTS)
The Annual Retail Trade Survey (ARTS) produces industry-level estimates of sales, expenses, and other items for the retail sector in the U.S. each year.


Annual Survey of Entrepreneurs (ASE)
Provides estimates of number of firms, sales/receipts, annual payroll, and employment by sex, ethnicity, race, and veteran status.


Annual Wholesale Trade Survey (AWTS)
AWTS is conducted every year to provide detailed industry measures of sales, inventories, operational expenses and purchases for wholesale trade activities.


Business Dynamics Statistics (BDS)
Tabulations of establishment openings/closings, firm startups/shutdowns, and job creation/destruction, with unique information on firm age and firm size.


Business Enterprise Research and Development Survey (BERD)
Provides detailed statistics on global and domestic R&D expenses of U.S. based companies and statistics on R&D workforce, IP and technology transfer activities.


Commodity Flow Survey (CFS)
CFS is a joint project of Census and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics producing data on the movement of goods in the United States.


County Business Patterns (CBP)
Provides subnational economic data by industry, including the number of establishments, employment, first quarter payroll, and annual payroll.


Current Industrial Reports (CIR)
Provided monthly, quarterly, and annual measures of industrial activity for many years.


Nonemployer Statistics
An annual series that provides subnational economic data for businesses that have no paid employees and are subject to federal income tax.


Report of Organization
Collects information on current organization and operating information on multi-establishment firms in order to maintain the Business Register (BR).


Service Annual Survey (SAS)
Provides estimates of revenue and other measures for most traditional service industries.


Survey of Business Owners and Self-Employed Persons (SBO)
Provides estimates on selected economic and demographic characteristics for businesses & business owners by sex, ethnicity, race, and veteran status.
