Business and Owner Characteristics Surveys and Programs

Data are available at the national level, and in some cases, for states, metro areas and counties. These surveys provide information that is critical for understanding changes in the nation's economic structure and performance.


Annual Business Survey (ABS) Program
Provides annual data on select economic and demographic characteristics of employer businesses, including annual R&D estimates.


Annual Survey of Entrepreneurs (ASE)
Provides estimates of number of firms, sales/receipts, annual payroll, and employment by sex, ethnicity, race, and veteran status.


Business Dynamics Statistics (BDS)
Tabulations of establishment openings/closings, firm startups/shutdowns, and job creation/destruction, with unique information on firm age and firm size.


Business Enterprise Research and Development Survey (BERD)
Provides detailed statistics on global and domestic R&D expenses of U.S. based companies and statistics on R&D workforce, IP and technology transfer activities.


County Business Patterns (CBP)
Provides subnational economic data by industry, including the number of establishments, employment, first quarter payroll, and annual payroll.


Current Industrial Reports (CIR)
Provided monthly, quarterly, and annual measures of industrial activity for many years.


Economic Census
The Economic Census is the official five-year measure of American businesses providing comprehensive statistics at the national, state, and local levels. Follow the 2022 Economic Census release schedule for additional information.


Longitudinal Employer-Household Dynamics (LEHD)
The LEHD program combines federal, state and Census Bureau data on employers and employees under the Local Employment Dynamics Partnership.


Nonemployer Statistics
An annual series that provides subnational economic data for businesses that have no paid employees and are subject to federal income tax.


Nonemployer Statistics by Demographics (NES-D) Data
Provides estimates on economic and demographic characteristics for nonemployer businesses and business owners by sex, ethnicity, race, and veteran status.


Statistics of U.S. Businesses (SUSB)
Provides detailed annual data for U.S. business establishments by geography, industry, and enterprise size.


Survey of Business Owners and Self-Employed Persons (SBO)
Provides estimates on selected economic and demographic characteristics for businesses & business owners by sex, ethnicity, race, and veteran status.
