Chiricahua Apache Children Upon Arrival at Carlisle Indian School

This historical photograph taken at the Carlisle Indian Industrial School shows Chiricahua Apache children at the time of their arrival to the school in November 1886. Attended by more than 12,000 Native American children from more than 140 tribes between 1879 and 1918, Carlisle was the model for nearly 150 Indian schools. Between 1879 and 1902, J.N. Choate worked as a commercial photographer in Carlisle, Pa., and was commissioned to photograph students at the Carlisle Indian School. During that period, he often photographed students' visiting family members as well.
