Can you believe that it’s already November? Take advantage of our free Statistics in Schools classroom resources to help students learn interesting facts about popular November fare like Thanksgiving, the nation’s veterans’ population and differences among Native American dwellings.
Among other things, November is Native American Heritage Month! Celebrate the history and traditions of the American Indians and Alaskan Natives with our Statistics in Schools elementary school activity, Native American Dwellings. For this activity, students investigate differences among three types of Native American dwellings and write about their findings.
For the high school crowd, check out our activity, Exploring Federal Policy about Native Americans in the Late 1800s, which provides key information about what life was like for young Native Americans in the nineteenth century.
National STEM/STEAM Day is November 8. Encourage your students to investigate careers in science, technology, engineering, art, and math! Our new high school activity – Where to Next? – provides census statistics to determine which career they would like to pursue. They will consider factors such as the type of post-secondary-school education they might need, which cities or states have the best job opportunities for peoplein their chosen profession, and the average salaries and median age and sex in the profession while using the QuickFacts data access tool.
QuickFacts provides students with statistics for all states and counties, and for cities and towns with a population of 5,000 or more.
Commemorate our nation’s veterans with our 5-minute challenge, Honoring Those Who Served. This quick activity has students look at percentages of veterans in states across the country and try to identify trends.
Keep an eye out for our Thanksgiving Fun Facts worksheet and teaching guide later this month. Students will learn about places with Thanksgiving-related names, states that raise the most turkeys, and more!
