2023 SIPP: Improved Allocation Process for Other Commuting Costs Edit

The allocation process for TJB[1-7]_PVOTHRC, the edited variable reflecting how much respondents spent per day on commuting expenses, has been improved for 2023 SIPP data. This improvement adds the parameter of "means of transportation to work" to the allocation process, so that the commuters in the eligible universe (i.e., those who do not drive to work in their own vehicle or in a company vehicle) who do not report their daily commuting costs will have a value allocated from reported responses reflecting comparable travel modes. The improvement affected a small number of respondents and thus had a negligible impact on overall allocation rates and on the overall distribution of values, but data users should be aware of this improvement and exercise caution when comparing allocated values of TJB[1-7]_PVOTHRC from the 2023 SIPP to prior years.
