2019 SIPP: One Case with Negative Hourly Earning Values

In 2019 SIPP, one respondent (SSUID = 66786009228019 and PNUM = 102) was imputed to have negative hourly earnings values. The imputed value was due to two issues: (1) SIPP’s Sequential Regression Multiple Imputation (SRMI) Earnings process accidentally allowing for a negative hourly earnings value to be assigned, and (2) the profits questions treating the imputed value as a spell-level variable even though the questions ask about annual profits.  

The issue with negative values in the SRMI process has been addressed for future years. Users wishing to learn more about the profits issue should see the User Note titled “2019 SIPP: Business Profits Collection and Processing Issue”.

We recommend that data users use the value of $13.50 per hour for January, February, and June to December for this case. Using this new value, the calculated alternative values for TJB1_WKSUM(i), TJB1_MSUM, TJB1_MSUMALT, TPEARN, and TPEARN_ALT are as follows:
