Parental leave data were collected in the 2019 SIPP for the first time since the 2008 Panel, but the question sequence was different from prior panels. These questions were asked of both men and women for the first time starting in 2019. In addition, respondents that worked during the pregnancy preceding their first birth (EPREGWORK) were asked if they continued working up until the birth (EPREGSTOP). Only respondents with EPREGSTOP = 1 (“Yes”) are in universe for the variables about types of leave taken following the birth (EBIRTHRSN1-10). Only respondents with EPREGSTOP = 2 (“No”) are in universe for the variables about how long prior to the birth they stopped working (EPREBIRTHINT), what type of leave they took prior to the birth (EPREGRSN1-10), whether they returned to work after the birth of the child (EBIRTHWORK) and how long after the birth they returned to work (TPSTBIRTHINT). Additionally, the set of respondents with EPREGSTOP = 2 is unexpectedly small. As a result, parental leave estimates from the 2019 SIPP are not comparable to the 2008 panel and earlier, and data users should exercise caution when using EPREGSTOP and the variables only in universe for those with EPREGSTOP = 2 (EPREBIRTHINT, EPREGRSN1-10, EBIRTHWORK, TPSTBIRTHINT).
