2018 SIPP: Improvements to Residence Data Processing as of the 2018 SIPP

As of the 2018 SIPP, improvements were made to the processing methods for the residence data.

A text-string matching algorithm was added to the processing of residence addresses for 2018 to make decisions about assigning respondents to residences. The algorithm matches addresses with minor formatting differences that point to the same physical location. This improves the quality of the Residence ID variable (ERESIDENCEID) by merging together and splitting like and unlike addresses that are misidentified when the instrument assigns the Residence ID.

As a result of the improvement, as of 2018 we expect the residence data to be more accurate and to more accurately reflect moves between residences.

Caution is recommended when comparing residence and migration estimates (for example, mover rates) between the 2014 Panel and the 2018 SIPP and later, as these estimates may not be directly comparable.
