2014 Panel Wave 3: Problems with Program and Retirement Income Data

In Waves 1-4 of the 2014 SIPP Panel, some variables measuring annual program or retirement income receipt are potentially inconsistent with the corresponding monthly indicators of receipt.

Topic Annual variable(s) Monthly variable(s)
Social Security for the respondent ESSSANY, ESSRSN1YN-ESSRSN5YN ESSSMNYN
Social Security on behalf of a child ESSCANY, ESSKID1YN-ESSKID2YN ESSCMNYN
Retirement income ERETANY, ERETTYP1YN-ERETTYP8YN ERET1MNYN-ERET8MNYN
Disability income EDISANY, EDISTYP1YN-EDISTYP10YN EDIS1MNYN-EDIS10MNYN
Survivor income ESURANY, ESURTYP1YN-ESURTYP13YN ESUR1MNYN-ESUR13MNYN
Veterans’ benefits EVAANY, EVATYP1YN-EVATYP5YN EVA1MNYN-EVA5MNYN

For a small number of cases, respondents may have a value of “yes” for receipt during the reference year but “no” values for all months of the reference year. The monthly data are correct, and the annual indicators were coded in error. In those cases where there is a discrepancy between the two, data users should use the set of monthly variables to determine annual program receipt.
