2014 Panel Wave 3: Incorrect Duration of Residence Values in 2014

In the 2014 Panel Waves 3 and 4, some respondents received incorrect duration of residence values. This error primarily affected respondents in Wave 3 who moved during the reference period of Wave 1 and respondents in Wave 4 who moved during the reference period of Waves 1 or 2. These respondents should have durations of residence 12 to 24 months longer than those reported in the Waves 3 and 4 data. Because these respondents moved during the course of the panel, it is possible to calculate the correct duration for these respondents by merging the Waves of the panel together and identifying the time between the current month and the month of last reported move.

Data users using or computing duration of residence estimates using the TRESDUR variable from the 2014 Panel Waves 3 and 4 data should note these errors. Caution should be used comparing these estimates using TRESDUR for the 2014 Panel Waves 3 and 4 with Waves 1 and 2 and the 2018 SIPP and later.

For more information about potential data issues related to year and month moved in and residence duration, please see the user note about corrections made in the 2018 SIPP.
