2014 Panel Wave 3: Inconsistent Industry and Occupation Codes

A small number of cases have varying industry and occupation codes (TJBx_IND, TJBx_OCC, TNJ_OCC, and TNJ_IND) for jobs held during the reference year. As a result, the monthly values for industry and occupation may not be consistent with the underlying spell information or unpaid family worker information collected from the interviewing instrument. If data users encounter more than one industry or occupation code per job, they should take only one instance of industry per job and one instance of occupation per spell. Industry should remain the same across all months of the job while occupation should remain the same across all months of a job spell. For jobs with more than one industry or occupation code, data users also should take the “as reported” value, when available, over the imputed value based on the corresponding information in AJBx_IND and AJBx_OCC. Employment spells can be identified using the variables EJBx_BMONTH and EJBx_EMONTH. The unpaid family worker employment can be identified using the variables ENJ_BMONTH and ENJ_EMONTH.
