In the 2014 Panel, some respondents received year and month moved in values that preceded their year and month of birth.
Some respondents with missing data were assigned a year moved in before their year of birth, when they should have been assigned their year of birth. Similarly, some respondents were assigned their year of birth when they should have been assigned a different value.
In the 2018 SIPP, this issue was resolved by changing how some of the move-in years were processed, and changing remaining illogical move-in months to the month of birth.
Data users using year and month moved in variables from the 2014 SIPP Panel data should note these inconsistencies. Caution should be used comparing these estimates between the 2014 Panel and the 2018 SIPP. Please also note that these estimates are used to compute a recode variable, residence duration in months (TRESDUR), so the same guidance applies.
