2014 Panel Wave 2: Recode for Public/Private Health Coverage

Some health insurance recode variables classify insurance types differently than other U.S. Census Bureau surveys do.  In SIPP, people are classified as having private insurance (RPRIMTH) if they reported having a private insurance plan, other coverage obtained through a person in the household, or reported a Medigap plan.  Meanwhile, the CPS ASEC defines having private coverage as those who reported a private plan or TRICARE military coverage.

In SIPP, people are classified as having public coverage (RPUBMTH) if they report Medicaid, Medicare (Part B or D), any type of military plan, or any public or government provided coverage.  CPS ASEC defines public coverage as having Medicaid, Medicare, or CHAMPVA/VA care.
