2014 Panel Wave 2: Disability recode
This user note serves to update the description of RDIS_ALT in the User’s Guide as well as the Metadata.
The User’s Guide and the Metadata mistakenly indicate that RDIS_ALT indicates a disability in at least one of the six standard disabilities or at least one of the child or work disabilities.
RDIS_ALT indicates the respondent has at least one disability in either the six standard disabilities (ESEEING, EHEARING, ECOGNIT, EAMBULAT, ESELFCARE, EERRANDS) or the child disabilities (EDDELAY, EPLAYDIF, ESKOOLWK).
If users are interested in a disability variable that also includes work disability, a recode must be made that includes “yes” responses to at least one of the work disability questions (EDISABL, EFINDJOB, EJOBCANT).
One example of this recode is as follows:
if edisabl=1 or efindjob=1 or ejobcant=1 then wkdis=1; else wkdis=2;
if rdis_alt=1 or wkdis=1 then alldis=1; else alldis=2;
