Under a multi-year agreement with the Small Business Administration Office of Advocacy and the National Women's Business Council, the U.S. Census Bureau created longitudinal estimates of establishment expansions, contractions, and deaths (closed establishments) using 2002 Survey of Business Owners data and the Business Information Tracking Series (BITS), a database that tracks establishments over time. Estimates were created for the periods 2002-2003, 2002-2004, 2002-2005, and 2002-2006.
Note that only those firms in the SBO sample and matching to the BITS were used to create the estimates; the estimates presented here may not match other estimates produced from SBO data. Also, these estimates are presented on an establishment basis rather than on a company or a firm basis like other SBO estimates. An establishment is a single physical location at which business is conducted or services or industrial operations are performed. An enterprise, company, or firm is a business consisting of one or more domestic establishments.
