Evaluation Estimates

Each decade, the Population Estimates Program has the opportunity to make comparisons between the final series of estimates for the decade and the latest decennial census to assess the accuracy of the estimates. Differences between the estimates and Census counts are typically interpreted as error in the estimates and are used to inform research and methodological improvements over the decade.

Vintage 2010 Population Estimates and 2010 Census Counts for the United States, States, Counties, Puerto Rico, and Subcounty Areas

The Vintage 2010 estimates were compared against the 2010 Census to evaluate the accuracy of the estimates. They are based on Census 2000 and were created without incorporation or consideration of the 2010 Census results. For background on how the estimates were produced, see the Release Notes for Vintage 2010 Estimates. For full methodological detail on the production of population estimates, please refer to Vintage 2009 methodology statements.

Additional annual Vintage 2010 estimates have been prepared for the components of population change (births, deaths, and migration), as well as for demographic characteristics of the population (age, sex, race, and Hispanic origin).

State and County Components of Population Change - Released March 2012

Note: The CO-EST2010-ALLDATA file that was released on Thursday, 3/29/2012 contained an error. The components of change for the period 7/1/2009 to 6/30/2010 were incorrect. The file was removed from the website on Monday, 4/2/2012, and replaced with a corrected file on Friday, 4/6/2012.

United States Demographic Characteristics - Released March 2012

Note: The file "NC-EST2010-ALLDATA.csv" that was previously available was incorrectly aggregated. The sum of the five race groups (each OMB race alone or in combination with other races) equaled the total population, even though people of more than one race should have been represented multiple times. The file was replaced with a corrected version on September 10, 2012.

Alternative Vintage 2010 Total Population Estimates and 2010 Census Counts for the United States, States, Counties, and Subcounty Areas

The U.S., state, and county estimates described above were produced with the Administrative Records Method, which incorporate special censuses and local challenges. The following estimates were produced with the same method, but without incorporating special censuses and local challenges. The subcounty estimates described above were produced using the methodology in place as of 2009. The following subcounty estimates were produced with the same method, but without incorporating official adjustments made during processing. These adjustments account for special censuses, local challenges, and other data accepted as part of our formal review process.

Vintage 2010 Housing Unit Estimates and 2010 Census Counts for States and Counties

The release of Vintage 2010 estimates provides the opportunity to make comparisons with the 2010 Census to assess the accuracy of the estimates. Differences between the estimates and Census counts should be interpreted as error in the estimates and not the Census counts. For background on how the estimates were produced, see the Release Notes for Vintage 2010 Estimates. For full methodological detail on the production of housing unit estimates, please refer to the Vintage 2009 methodology statement for State and County Total Housing Unit Estimates.

Alternative Vintage 2010 Housing Unit Estimates and 2010 Census Counts for States and Counties

The state and county housing unit estimates described above incorporate special censuses and local challenges. The following estimates were produced with the same method, but without incorporating special censuses and local challenges.
