2012 Economic Census Methodology
The Census Bureau provides detailed information about the methods used to collect and produce statistics, including sampling, eligibility, questions, data collection and processing, data quality, review, weighting, estimation, coding operations, etc.
Different Methodologies
The economic census is based on a complete enumeration of all known employer establishments in some sectors and a sample of establishments in other sectors.
Sample Design & Basis of Reporting
The economic census is primarily conducted on an establishment basis.
Reliability of Data
All economic census results are subject to nonsampling error.
Industry Classification of Establishments
The industry classifications for all establishments covered by the economic census and surveys are based on the North American Industry Classification System.
Method of Assigning Tax Status
Establishments are classified based on the federal income tax filing requirement for the establishment or organization.
Data Processing & Treatment of Nonresponse
Data are processed in three primary ways: Data Edits,Nonresponse Imputation,Tabulation and Analytical Processing.
