Census Bureau data, and data from other agencies, within the Data Linkage Infrastructure can be accessed via the Federal Statistical Research Data Center (FSRDC) network by researchers on approved projects. This includes the decennial census microdata that can be linked at the individual-level using anonymous linkage keys and are protected by Title 13.
The FSRDC network currently includes physical research centers at universities and research institutions, and many projects are currently approved for virtual access. Learn more about accessing restricted Census Data.
Since 1952, the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) has released complete records of decennial censuses to the public 72 years after the census was collected. These data have been made available for researchers by IPUMS, and various research organizations have linked the records at the individual level. Researchers can request the use of the historical full count data from IPUMS within the FSRDC. Currently, the 1940 Census can be linked at the individual level to the 2000-2020 data and other Census Bureau Surveys and administrative records.
