ASEC User Note: Redesign of the CPS ASEC 1-year Detailed Table Package for Geographic Mobility: 2022

The Census Bureau has produced tables on geographic mobility since 1947. Since their inception, these tables have undergone several revisions. The 2022 table package includes two notable changes.

First, to streamline the table package and prioritize the highest-quality estimates, the overall number of tables and estimates was reduced, with most tables renumbered. Some characteristics included in 2021 and prior were collapsed with other categories for consistency across tables, and some were reduced or removed altogether. Survey year labels were also revised to single years for simplicity (e.g., “2022” instead of “2021-2022” mobility period). Second, a supplemental tables series (denoted with -S) was introduced, providing more detailed characteristics than the standard tables, but with less detailed geographic mobility estimates.

Similarly, as of the 2022 release historical tables include new collapses, and historical graphs were revised and streamlined. Survey year labels were also revised to single years. Also as of the 2022 release, Historical Table and Figure A-6 (Distance of Intercounty Move) were no longer updated.

The spreadsheet below outlines the changes between the following one-year Geographic Mobility table packages: 2014 and 2015; 2014 and 2017; 2017 and 2018; 2018 and 2019; 2019 and 2020; 2020 and 2021; and 2021 and 2022.
