ASEC User Note: Redesign of the Geographic Mobility Table Package: 2020 1-year

The Journey-to-Work and Migration Statistics Branch has produced annual tables on geographic mobility since 1947. Since their inception, these tables have been modified to meet the needs of data users. Specifically, a new reason for moving category was added in 2020, “relationship with unmarried partner (boy/girlfriend, fiancé, etc.)” and the language for “wanted newer/better/larger house or apartment” was revised. In tables including poverty status, this label now clarifies the poverty universe. See the respective 2020 user notes for both of these updates (https://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/cps/technical-documentation/user-notes/geographic-mobility-user-notes.html). There were also some further improvements to labels and formatting. The detailed spreadsheet below outlines the changes between the following Geographic Mobility table packages: 2014 and 2015; 2014 and 2017; 2017 and 2018; 2018 and 2019; and 2019 and 2020.
