Census Household Survey (CHS)

Frequently Asked Questions

Why was I chosen for this survey?

Your address was selected through scientific sampling to participate in this survey, representing households like yours to improve the Census Bureau survey experience.

How will the responses I provide be used?

By law, the Census Bureau can only use your responses to produce statistics. Your information will be used in combination with information from other households for statistical purposes only to inform future decision-making at the Census Bureau.

How will my privacy be protected by the Census Bureau?

The U.S. Census Bureau is required by Section 9 of Title 13 United States Code to keep respondents' information confidential and can use the information only to produce statistics. The Census Bureau is not permitted to publicly release your information in a way that could identify you. Per the Federal Cybersecurity Enhancement Act of 2015, your data are protected from cybersecurity risks through screening of the systems that transmit the data.

How much time will it take to respond?

This survey should take approximately 10 minutes to complete.

Who should I contact if I have questions about this survey?

If you have any questions about this survey, please contact the customer service number provided on your Census Bureau letter or postcard.

How is this survey different than the Census?

The decennial census is a mandatory survey that occurs every 10 years, which impacts both the federal budget allocation and congressional representative appropriation. This survey is a household survey sponsored by the Census Bureau, which will be used to improve the quality and experience of future Census Bureau surveys.

Why should I participate in this survey?

Your response matters. A few minutes of your time can make an impact on decisions made for future surveys at the Census Bureau.

Where do I find my User ID?

The User ID is a 12-digit code made up of letters and numbers. The Census Bureau sent you your User ID in the mail. The image on the login screen provides an example of where to find it in the letter we sent you.

What is a verification code?

If you logged in to the survey using your email address or telephone number, the Census Bureau will send you a verification code. It is used to verify your identity when logging into the survey. This code will be 8 digits long and can only be used once. The code will expire in 15 minutes. You can have a code resent to you by selecting the “resend” button on the login screen.

Why do I need to create an account?

If you are unable to complete the survey in one session, creating an account allows you to re-enter the survey and pick up where you left off instead of starting over.

Why do I need a verification code?

Verification codes help ensure the security of your data and personal information by verifying that you are the legitimate user accessing the survey. This helps prevent unauthorized access and reduces the risk of fraud

How do I receive a verification code?

Verification codes are typically sent to you via email, SMS, or authentication account (e.g., Google, Microsoft, Apple, or LinkedIn account login).

I didn’t receive a verification code. What should I do?

First, check your Spam/Junk folder, as emails may end up there. Next, verify your contact details and ensure you are entering the correct email address or phone number. Then, use the option to resend the verification code. Finally, contact the customer service number provided on your Census Bureau letter or postcard if you still did not receive the code.

The verification code I received is expired. What should I do?

Verification codes are valid for 15 minutes. If your code has expired, request a new one. Make sure to use the new code promptly before it expires.

Can I use the same verification code more than once?

No, verification codes are single-use and expire after 15 minutes. For each verification request, you will need to use a new code.
