Annual Survey of Manufactures (ASM) Product Class Codes and Descriptions

The 2018 Annual Survey of Manufactures (ASM) was the first ASM to use the North American Product Classification System (NAPCS).  NAPCS was first introduced and used in the 2017 Economic Census.  It is a comprehensive, market- or demand-based, hierarchical classification system for products (goods and services).  It is (a) not industry-of-origin based but can be linked to the NAICS industry structure, (b) consistent across the three North American countries, and (c) promotes improvements in the identification and classification of service products across international classification systems, such as the Central Product Classification System of the United Nations.  Additional information on NAPCS is available at: https://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/economic-census/guidance/understanding-napcs.html

The table below shows the version of the NAPCS Broad Line Codes used for the Annual Survey of Manufactures (ASM) as of 2021. Broad Line Codes appear in the left column and their corresponding descriptions in the right column.
