2022 Annual Retail Trade Survey - Summary of Changes (restated)

Summary of Changes

The following changes were made with the re-release of the 2022 Annual Retail Trade (ARTS) estimates:

  • Restatement to the 2017 NAICS

The 2022 Annual Retail Trade Survey (ARTS) estimates were re-released to incorporate the 2017 North American Industry Classification System (NAICS). Publication tables were reformatted to incorporate the 2017 NAICS definitions.

Below is a table of the 2017 NAICS definition changes for NAICS sector 44-45. NAICS industries affected by the definition changes have been restated to the beginning of their time series.

For more information on the 2017 NAICS changes from the Economic Census, you can refer to the 2017 Bridge Statistics report that includes data for 2017 for industries whose NAICS codes changed from 2012 to 2017 and shows the components of the NAICS change. The first table of the report shows 2017 NAICS industries and their 2012 NAICS-based parts. The second table shows 2012 NAICS industries and their 2017 NAICS-based parts.

  ●  Removal of Nonemployers

Previously in the Annual Retail Trade Survey, firms without paid employees, or nonemployers, were included in the estimates through imputation or administrative data provided by other federal agencies. In addition to the 2017 North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) changes, the Annual Retail Trade Survey restated data to include employer-only time series to be aligned with the Annual Integrated Economic Survey (AIES).  The change impacts the following tables:

  • Sales (1992 – 2022)
  • Sales Taxes (2004 – 2022)
  • Inventories  (1992 – 2022)
  • Purchases  (1992 – 2022)
  • Gross Margins (1993 – 2022)
  • Per Capita Sales (2000 – 2022)
  • U.S. Retail Trade Sales - Total and E-commerce (1998 – 2022)
  • Sales for U.S. Electronic Shopping and Mail-Order Houses (NAICS 4541) - Total and E-commerce by Primary Business Activity (2015-2022)
