The 2022 American Community Survey (ACS) data products generally reflect the State of Connecticut's nine Council of Governments (COGs)/planning regions as county-equivalent geographic units, replacing the eight counties which ceased to function as governmental and administrative entities in 1960. However, Office of Management and Budget (OMB) delineations for Core Based Statistical Areas (CBSAs) reflecting the 2022 Connecticut county changes were not available for 2022 ACS production. All 2018-2022 ACS 5-year estimates for Connecticut summary levels that contain both CBSA and county geography are thus based on the former Connecticut county boundaries (prior to 2022).
The affected summary levels are:
313 Metropolitan Statistical Area/Micropolitan Statistical Area-State-County
322 State-Metropolitan Statistical Area/Micropolitan Statistical Area-County
353 New England City and Town Area-State-County
354 New England City and Town Area-State-County-County Subdivision
362 State-New England City and Town Area-County
363 State-New England City and Town Area-County-County Subdivision
Previously released ACS data products are not typically re-released following changes in geographic definitions. However, given the significance of the Connecticut county-level change, the 2018, 2019, and 2021 ACS 1-year data will be tabulated for the new county-equivalent geographies within the 2022 and subsequent 1-year Comparison Profiles. This unprecedented step will allow data users to make direct comparisons of 2022 ACS 1-year estimates for Connecticut county-equivalent geographic units with prior year data for the most frequently requested social, economic, housing, and demographic characteristics. All nine of Connecticut’s Council of Government (COGs)/planning regions meet the 65,000 population threshold to receive ACS 1-year estimates and Comparison Profiles.
ACS 5-year Comparison Profiles for Connecticut county-equivalent geographies will not be available until the 2027 ACS release at which time both non-overlapping periods (2018-2022 v 2023-2027) will finally be based on the new county-equivalent geographies.
